BOYCR Sanctuary Dog Program

Because of You Chihuahua Rescue is a safe haven for many unwanted, sick or neglected Chihuahuas. We receive dogs in our care that end up staying as "permanent"  or "resident" dogs.  These are dogs that no one wants to adopt due to age, ongoing health problems or behavioral issues.

Just because these chihuahuas are not the most desirable to place into our adoption program, does not mean that we toss them aside or not live up to our commitment to them;  nor do we euthanize them.   Instead, these dogs live out their lives with us, in our homes, as the responsibility of Because of You Chihuahua Rescue, Inc. for the remainder of their lives. BOYCR acts as a retirement home for these chihuahuas and maintains their care.

The "resident" dogs have become very special to us and we give them unconditional love in return.  Care for these chihuahuas can be very costly but with the help of generous donors and sponsors like you, BOYCR can continue to help the "throw away" chihuahuas that would otherwise not have a chance. Please help us, help them and sponsor a resident chi today!

Butter

My name is Butter, I was found wandering the streets in Chandler. Some nice people picked me up and cared for me but they could not keep me so they called the rescue and now I am living here. It is a good place. I share my life with my foster mom's dogs and three other seniors. She says I can live here for the rest of my life if no one wants to take me home. I am glad that I will have a safe and warm place to stay. I get good food that is soft so I can eat it, and arthritis medicine. I like to sleep most of the time. I am losing my bowel control, but mom does not care. She bought me some panites to wear but I really do not like them. I do go outside to potty most of the time and I sleep with my mom but she must wake up during the night to take me out to potty.
I have never barked and I am a little shy about being picked up. All of these things are fine with my mom. So if you would like to help with my expenses, she sure would appreciate your help!

Peanut

This is our Peanut. and we call him our Peanut Shell. He got his name while we were on the road bringing him back to Okla. My foster mom who was holding him, kept calling him a 'punkin seed". I told her he was a peanut. so we laughed and began calling him the Peanut Shell! He is a 15 year old senior male. He is not neutered because he is in too poor of shape to be able to be up under anesthesia. He is a wooping 3.5 pounds of boy!
When we first got him, he was thin, and had no hair because he had flea allergy so bad. He has had a broken nose at some time in his life and it is crooked and to the side. He is mostly blind, seeing light and dark shadows only, but gets around quite well. He hears fine though, and always comes running for breakfast/dinner. He talks while I am preparing his meals. And thinks I am always too slow! He has no teeth so he gets soft food. He also has no lower jaw bone so he has to lick his food and his tongue hangs out all the time. He has arthritis and takes medicine each day.
He is so stinkin cute, you just want to kiss him all over! And he is so spunky and happy about life! He sleeps with me. He still has control of his bowels. He is housebroke, going out the doggy door to go potty, and does not "mark" in the house.
We know nothing of his history except that he was an owner surrender at a shelter in Texas. I look at him and wonder how anyone could share their life with this little guy and then throw him away........
He is happy here and still active. He will be with us until his days are done and he goes to the rainbow bridge to wait for me. I love him so much!!!!!
If you would like to help with his expenses, please donate in his name

Pappy

Meet Pappy. Thats what he was named when they had him in the Guthrie Animal Shelter.
I have no information about him but I can tell you that whoever had him, kept him outside, since he was tick infested and when we did a tick disease test, he was positive. He has Erlicka. He cowers so much that they must have really been mean to him. He is such a good boy, he has learned not to mark or pee in the house, and now uses the dog door to go outside and do his business.
At first he was really afraid of the outside. I guess he was thinking I would not let him back in......
He was also extremely thin, but is now healthy and no bones show anymore!
We also found that he was positive for heartworms, but until we get his blood count up, he can not begin the treatment to rid his body of the heartworms, or we might loose him.
Now, as his bloodwork is looking better, we now have an enlarged heart and a mummer. So he is on heart meds and Lasik.
What is wrong with people that they would inflict this much pain and suffering on such a sweet little boy who just craves loving????????
He will be here with us for some time, but he will be needing a good loving INDOOR home at some point. He sleeps with me and can not get close enough. He gets along with the other foster dogs. He is no trouble at all. The shelter thought he was an old dog by the way he looked. but he was just in bad shape. BUT NO MORE!!!!!.
He has been neutered and gotten his shots, and has been microchipped. Also we have cleaned his teeth. He weighs about 7 pounds now......
If we can not find him the perfect home, he can stay here with me for the rest of his days. He deserves a happy healthy life from here on.

Update October 17, 2009
Pappy has had his heartworm treatment, and now there is no reason holding him back from going to a new home and living a long heathly life! He is looking for YOU
Update 11-25-09
Pappy is just the sweetest dog ever, but we moved him to another foster home and he regressed, so badly, that I have brought him back here to my home. He is just so shy and beaten down, he is still afraid to go outside in the dark, and if i raise my voice about anything, he crawls on his belly to the nearest corner and cowers.
I have come to the decision that he would probably be so stressed about moving to a new home, that he would become sick again, the Erlicka would begin to pull him down. So I have decided to pull him from the adoption list and move him to "permanent resident " status. ALSO, I took him to the vet this past week and he has a different mummer to his heart. He takes meds for the previous mummer, but the vet thinks this new sound may be some new damage from the heartworms.
He would appreciate any donations to help with his long term care.

Lightnbug

This elderly man is named Lightnbug. He was named such by his foster mom who said he moved so fast, he seemed to be in fast gear every where he went.
He came to us from the OKC animal shelter.
He is very small, about 4 pounds, and is black and white. He was in very bad need of a dental cleaning, so that was our primary vet need. He went into the vet a happy lively boy, and came out paralized.
They told us he had a stroke, on the table. We took him to two other vets who agreed it was not a stroke but damage to his neck. The vets told us that he could possibly come out of it, but it might take a couple of weeks. Well, time went by, different meds were tried, and he was still unable to move. We tried water therapy with a support band that I made, (so he would go to the bathroom, too).
He loooked so sad, his mind was alert but his body would not function. I prepared his foster mom for the possibliy that we would need to put him to sleep. Since I felt he had no quality of life........
As a last resort, I suggested to our vet that we try a drug called Gababpentin, (which another foster mom had her dog on, for nerve problems.)
He said we could try it. Three days later, he was up and walking!!! He continued the drug for a while and is now off the meds and back to normal. He runs, plays, likes to bite my ankles, and run the fence. He is such a great boy, except he is not in the least, housebroken. Every corner is fair game!!! ha We are so lucky to have him here, that I clean it up and go on!
He has a home with us for as long as God wants him here...
